BOTH MORE AND LESS THAN ITSELF is a new collaborative project that grows out of a dense network of previous collaborations, with shared projects between the members setting the ground for new connections.

The previously existing constellations have developed their own aesthetics and practices over time, with distinctive sound worlds and methods of interaction. These accumulated experiences and memories are brought into the sextet. The project is not simply a meeting of six individuals but also of the ensembles and histories they bring into the collective.

The ensemble has a wide instrumental range, with setups moving between acoustic sources, experimental amplification, electronics and preparations. With this, they will develop a 60–80 minute set during a residency at Studioboerne45. A variety of collaborative strategies will be put into practice, using improvisation, different forms of notation or any other means necessary.

Marina Cyrino is a
Brazilian flutist, sound artist and researcher currently based in
Berlin. She works across improvisation, composition, DIY instruments,
performative installations. She is a member of the Brazilian
experimental music label/production house Seminal Records. She holds
a PhD in Music Performance and Interpretation from the University of

the use of disassembled flute parts are striking elements of her
playing.

Tom Malmendier is a

improvisation naturally imposes itself as a central point of all his
musical and sound research. He claims an interest in
transdisciplinary projects and multiplies meetings with dancers,
visual artists or poets.

He
plays with Otomo Yoshihide, Fred Frith, Axel Dörner, Michael Thieke,
Franz Hautzinger, Christine Abdelnour, Mike Ladd...

Emilie Škrijelj explores
the accordion in its smallest folds and uses it both as a percussion
instrument and a generator of electroacoustic materials. Inspired by
her research around the turntable, modular synths and field
recording, she brings the accordion to the abstract territory of
electronics by manipulating the bellows, rubbing its contours and
exploring its extremities.

She
plays with Lê Quan Ninh, Michael Thieke, Otomo Yoshihide, Christine
Abdelnour, Biliana Voutchkova, Xavier Charles, Mike Ladd…

The project REC-DISORDER explores the use of recorded sound in live performance. It proposes the creation and performance of four solo pieces to be composed and performed by Peter Cusack, Hanna Hartman, Felicity Mangan and Matthias Koole.

The project questions the role of recorded sound in relation to the physicality of the sound sources, the devices responsible for their transformation and reproduction, and the performers who record and perform.

Each solo piece will take a different perspective on recorded sound as a sonic, subjective, informative and imaginative tool in a performative environment.

In Cusack's approach, sound offers the possibility of perceiving other, unfamiliar places through a sensibility different from the visual and logocentric. In Hartman's work, the abstraction of sound gives way to the free association of disparate objects. In Mangan’s work, the recordings are transformed into “a quasi-bioacoustic music” with lots of attention to the rhythmic qualities. In Koole's work, the physical presence and performance of the performer merges with the spatiality of the recording.

With these four different approaches, the project proposes a multi-layered concert with different sensitive approaches to recorded sound in performance, reflecting on how disembodied and reembodied sound and performance can make us perceive materiality differently.

He initiated the “Favourite Sounds Project, which started in London and has since taken place in Beijing, Prague, Manchester, Taranto, Hull, Berlin, Braunschweig. His project ‘Sounds from Dangerous Places’ (sonic journalism) has investigated the soundscapes of sites

of major environmental damage like the Caspian oil fields, the Chernobyl exclusion zone and the Aral Sea, Central Asia, and asks the question, “What can be learnt about dangerous places by listening to their sounds?”. He is a member of Crisap (Creative Research into Sounds Arts Practice) at the University of the Arts, London and during 2011/12 was a guest of the DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogramm. His current work – field recording, audio streaming, soundwalks, guitar playing on location – often concerns environmental crises as they are heard close to home, particularly in Berlin where he lives.

Buck
Passing - Installation.

Institute for Certified Nomadic Illicit Sonic Practices (Matthias Koole
& Marina Cyrino) together with the poet/performer Angélica Freitas
and the film director/video artist Sina Ataeian Dena present the
installation version of their new interdisciplinary collective creation.
The project »Buck-Passing« is both a sound-theatre performance and a
multimedia installation. The artists combine instrumental techniques,
refined satire and critical use of chroma keying to address the
intertwining of global north and south in producing criminal
environmental disasters. They are interested in performing - and
intervening in patterns of attribution of blame, also known in English
as »buck-passing«. These are strategies to postpone responsibilities,
which aim to make the crimes fall into oblivion, hinder investigations,
and deviate from the essential: the care and protection of human and
other-than-human life.
The sound theatre performance was recorded in April at Morphine Raum and
is the basis for the installation they present at Labor Neunzehn.
The installation goes from 30.08-02.09 from 2 pm -6 pm.The artists will do a talk during the finissage on September 02 at 8 pm.
